Why Use Separation Internals?

Producers and operators alike have both operational objectives and performance standards to meet, and high-efficiency separation internals can get them there much more efficiently, while maintaining trouble-free plant operation, saving both time and money.

High-efficiency internals help reduce vessel size and cost by mechanically enhancing gravity settling (Stokes Law). Performance improvement, as well as the cost benefit, is much greater when using highly efficient internals than when simply increasing vessel size.

Separation Basics

Production typically consists of multiple phases, which can be divided into three major categories: gases, liquid phases (hydrocarbon and water), and solids (sand). Some phases evolve (e.g., condensate flashing) during processing which complicates phase separation as various processes are intolerant of unwanted phases.

There are four basic separation zones that have specific functions:

  1. Inlet Zone: bulk gas / liquid separation
  2. Gas Zone: Gas / liquid settling
  3. Liquid Disengagement Zone : Liquid / liquid solids settling
  4. “Polishing” Zone: Mist elimination from gas

Each particular zone is important to optimizing performance:

Zone 1
Zones 2 & 3
Zone 4
